“The only way to support a revolution is to make your own” – Abbie Hoffman, Woodstock Nation
Hello,
I’m in Sweden at the moment looking after Tour Management for a band from Texas called Uncle Lucius. I’ll be back again around November 4th. If you have ordered anything from Iron Man Records I will post out all orders on my return. If you are a Patron then feel free to put a request in for anything else you might be after and I’ll see what I can do. Here’s all the latest news so far, enjoy…..
"My goal is to live a truly religious life and express it in my music. If you live it, when you play there's no problem because the music is just part of the whole thing. To be a musician is really something. It goes very, very deep. My music is the spiritual expression of what l am - my faith, my knowledge, my being... When you begin to see the possibilities of music, you desire to do something really good for people, to help humanity free itself from its hang-ups. I think music can make the world better and, if I'm qualified, I want to do it. I'd like to point out to people the divine in a musical language that transcends words. I want to speak to their souls." - John Coltrane, quoted in Newsweek ("Death of a Jazz Man" July 31, 1967,)

Duruflé Requiem
Saturday 30th November 2024, 7:30pm
St Mary’s Church, Acocks Green. St Mary’s Close, B27 6QX
Join notorious and Midland Chamber Orchestra for a special performance of the Duruflé Requiem – a profoundly beautiful ethereal piece – in the atmospheric setting of St Mary’s Acocks Green.
Composed in 1947 in memory of his father who died during the Second World War, the work is uniquely personal and reflective. Subtle rhythms and fluid lines of Gregorian chant permeate the whole piece, and the piece, and the result is a sublime musical expression of mourning and consolation.
The rich orchestration will be brought to life by Midland Chamber Orchestra, who will also perform an elegant classical programme – from the stately and elegant dance suite of the Pavane and Choconne by Purcell, to the dleivarte and lyrical Sicilienne by Fauré.
Mulled wine an mince pies will be available to purchase during the interval.
Oliver Gray’s memoir of twenty years of misadventures at the South By Southwest Festival in Austin, Texas.
“What is it REALLY like?” That’s the question my friends ask me about SXSW.
“It’s impossible to describe”, is always my answer.
Not that that has stopped me from trying to do just that, in twenty years’ worth of reviews for seven different magazines. This book draws all those articles together and adds a bit of history, some extra annotations, a bunch of ‘venue focuses’ and rather too many admissions of inadequacy and vulnerability.
The book also describes a unique and special friendship that has been sustained throughout two decades of music appreciation.
So here’s what it’s REALLY like.
‘Austin Healing' is South By South West experienced at street, bar and club level, at its most true and unadorned, seen through the eyes of a genuine obsessive, as Oliver Gray puts himself through it, year after year, for that purest of reasons: to fall in love with great live music.
Oliver always writes beautifully, on travel, music, anything else. So I knew 'Austin Healing' would be a charming read. But I absolutely gulped this book down. 'Austin Healing’ is very funny, yet also some of the most insightful and humane writing on South By South West - and the obsessive, addictive pleasure of a great band in a small room - that I’ve read. For me, Oliver Gray remains one of our most foolishly overlooked non-fiction authors.
