Dr. Millar - London Irish Centre Show 28th November 2024
“Ireland’s greatest songwriter” Hotpress
Naturalism and Objective Realism are artistic terms describing attempts to capture the real world as authentically as possible. In the visual arts, this movement would include names such as Courbet, Daumier, Manet and Hopper. In the modern Irish musical world, the name Dr. Millar reigns supreme.
In his birthplace, Hotpress Magazine has called Millar, ‘Ireland’s greatest songwriter.’ The RTE Guide states, ‘he remains Ireland’s best lyricist,’ and The Irish Times has referred to him as, ’the poet laureate of Dublin’s dark side, an Irish national treasure.’ One could conjure a picture of Millar standing on a corner, with a paintbrush held between his teeth, a pen in one hand and a scalpel in the other. He is the undisputed go-to, folk-punk coroner and stenographer of life behind the cultural curtains.
Sean Millar, the man behind the pseudonym has been, for the past two decades or so, revered for his incredibly incisive work, launching first with the album Gig (1990) alongside his European touring band Dr. Millar & The Cute Hoors. Stepping out as a solo artist he released, The Bitter Lie (1995), produced by Tymon Dogg of The Clash. Notably this debut, under his pared down moniker garnered the ‘best album of all time,’ accolade from Ireland’s Today FM. Millar cemented his reputation with follow-up works: The Deal (1998), Always Coming Home (Dr. Millar & The Beet Club) (2002), Of The People (Parts 1 and 2) (2010), C48 (2013), and Ruining Everything (2022) as well as a host of EP singles.
Putting his backbone where his songs have been, Dr. Millar has worked between tours and recording projects, as a community organiser, facilitating musical and theatrical workshops with groups from disadvantaged areas. These productions have led to the development of more intricate theatrical works for wider audiences, seeing his plays and/or musical scores touring Europe and beyond. Notably, Silver Stars, staged by Dublin’s Brokentalkers Theatre Company, garnered much praise on its runs through New York, Paris, Finland and New Zealand, as did the follow-up, The Blue Boy.
Other musical projects Millar has been involved with include: The Unelectables, with close friend and Fat Lady Sings frontman, Nick Kelly, as well as their touring duo, Dogs, which played the iconic Glastonbury Festival and have had singles play-listed on Ireland’s RTE radio.
Sean Millar lives in Dublin, on equal footing with his acclaimed actor wife, Pom Boyd, and their insanely, musically talented children.
Dr. Millar’s last show at Whelan’s of Wexford St. in Dublin was a huge sold out success and listed as Gig of the Week by Tony Clayton Lee of The Irish Times.
